Net income for the nine months ended September 30 , 2021 was $ 74.4 million , or $ 2.52 diluted earnings per share , compared to net income of $ 21.0 million , or $ 0.72 diluted earnings per share , for the nine months ended September 30 , 2020 . Pre - tax pre - provision income for the quarter ended September 30 , 2021 was $ 26.0 million , a decrease of $ 1.1 million , or 4.2 % , from the third quarter of 2020. Pre - tax pre - provision income for the nine months ended September 30 , 2021 was $ 80.8 million , an increase of $ 6.1 million , or 8.1 % , from the comparable period in the prior year . One - Time Items The financial results for the three and nine months ended September 30 , 2021 included tax - free bank owned life insurance ( " BOLI " ) death benefit claims of $ 196 thousand and $ 1.1 million , respectively , which represents $ 0.01 and $ 0.04 diluted earnings per share , respectively . 1 Non - GAAP metric .
